Choice Hotels was started in 1939, although then it was known as Quality courts, and was a referral chain of seven motel owners in the Southern United Staes. Quality Courts published a list of all the properties that complied with Quality Court's standards and referred guests to the properties that were members. Quality Courts was different from competitor Holiday Inn in the fact that there were not strict norms or guidelines for the franchise hotels they accepted into their membership. In 1972 the brand changed to franchising and became Quality International. Comfort Inns were introduced in 1982 and Clarion in 1987. In 1989 they began Sleep Inns and in 1990 they changed their name from Quality International to Choice Hotels. Mainstay Suites, a brand of mid-priced extended stay hotels was launched in 1997, as well as their Choice Privileges guest loyalty program. Cambria Suites were introduced in 200 and featured an upscale, all-suite, contemporary designed hotel brand. Their upscale, elite, collection of historic boutique and unique hotels for members only, Ascend Collection, was started in 2008. Their current headquarters, as of 2013, is in Rockville, Maryland.

Membership Programs

Choice Hotels offers membership and rewards programs for their loyal customers. Become a member of Choice Privileges and get great perks. Choice Privileges is a free membership program that you can enroll for during checkout. Choice Privileges members get exclusive deals on hotels that are not available to non-members. There are four levels of membership status, starting from the most basic membership which includes express reservations and check-in, extra pints and free gift cards, and extended checkout. No minimum nights are required. To achieve Gold status, members must stay a minimum of 10 nights per calendar year, and get perks like being able to book 50 days in advance for their reward nights, and 10% elite point bonus. Platinum membership requires a minimum of 20 nights stayed per calendar year, and Diamond membership is 40 nights per year.
