The last time we reviewed FastestVPN in early 2019 we weren't impressed, and the name? Not precise in our experience. What a difference a year makes. The company added new locations in countries and the total number of servers increased from 150 to 250. As for the claim, it is the fastest? The company is more convincing this time around.
FastestVPN ditched the single-pane design we saw last year for a more traditional office look. It still has the yellow lightning mark we saw in 2019 for its connect button.
You have a left rail with a variety of options, but the only ones you're likely to use are the house and the locations. The other two (About and Account) are informative.
The settings are accessible in the upper right corner of the home dashboard. This screen is very similar to what we saw in the last version of the app. You can change VPN protocol just by clicking on one of the five buttons: IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP, TCP and UDP. IKEv2 is the default and is the right choice for most people.
Below the VPN protocol options is a series of checkboxes. Internet Kill Switch is still there, as is the Launch on startup option which is enabled by default. FastestVPN also added a default option to reconnect if the VPN connection drops, the option to automatically connect on launch and to disconnect the VPN connection automatically if you close the app.
To return to the default home screen, you have the option to choose the country you want to connect to, or you can click on Smart Connect. This is a new feature for FastestVPN, but one that we have seen on other VPNs. The basic idea is that it finds the fastest VPN server compared to your actual location. Usually, this will be the closest server to you, but not always.
The application on Windows also provides ad blocking and malware protection. Both of these features are enabled by default and cannot be turned into OFF as they occur on the server side. The company claims that it is able to provide ad blocking by blocking blacklisted domains (known ad network) based on users' DNS requests. In our experience, ad blocking has been very effective.
FastestVPN now supports US streaming Netflix and Disney Plus. To use these streaming services, you can connect to the USA Miami server. Another option is to open settings, switch VPN protocol to UDP, then you will see an option for USA Netflix on the server list.
In our testing, the Netflix feature worked great, but Disney Plus was more problematic on the Miami server. Every time we went to the homepage it didn't show the 'buy now' options, and we couldn't log in. Disney's anti-VPN measures are not as extensive as Netflix's, however, and the move to another US server has been done all working fine for Disney Plus.
We asked the company about the Miami server issue and whether ad blocking features were preventing these buttons from showing; the company said it was unlikely. Nonetheless, we see no other reasonable explanation for this.
FastestVPN also plans to add split tunneling to its Windows application, but the feature was not ready for release at the time of writing this article. Split tunneling, where traffic can be split between VPN and direct internet connection according to user specifications, is currently available on Android and iOS apps.
The standard for VPN services is to offer five simultaneous connections per account. FastestVPN doubles that and allows an account for up to 10 device connections at a time.
Last time around we saw FastestVPN reach around 30% base speed which is pretty average for a VPN service. This time around, speeds were generally up to 45% of base speed, which is pretty good.
As usual, these results don't tell the whole story. The speeds of FastestVPN were exceptional in the US, UK and Germany. Our tests in Asia and Australia were inconsistent. One day we managed to get an incredible speed score in Singapore, but often the results in that part of the world were unusable.
Despite this result, however, FastestVPN's other locations were so good they didn't lower the score too much. The scores weren't good enough to beat the current HotSpot Shield speed champion, but overall the results are still very good.
The official business location for the fastest VPN is the Cayman Islands. The company chose this location to avoid any laws requiring it to continue browsing customer records. The department also has a business office in Los Angeles. The CEO of the company is Azneem Bilwani.
FastestVPN's privacy policy says that it does not log any information about its customers. The only thing the company keeps, she says, is the email address. The policy itself is also very easy to read and is written in FAQ form.
To register for an account, FastestVPN requires an email address. The company accepts payment by credit card or PayPal.
FastestVPN is much better than our last visit. It offers more servers, more locations, it supports streaming services, it looks good on Windows, and it is easy to use. FastestVPN offers enough speed for most everyday use, and it has some nice extra features like malware and ad blocking, internet kill switch, and split tunneling will be coming to Windows soon.
We're not fans of exotic shopping sites to avoid keeping records, but at $ 30 for 10 connections it's worth considering.
Editor's Note: As online services are often iterative, gaining new features and improving performance over time, this review is subject to change to accurately reflect the current state of the service. Any text changes or our final review verdict will be noted at the top of this article.
Note: When you buy something after clicking links in our items, we may earn a small commission. Read our Affiliate Links Policy for more details. The FastestVPN website has a clear title stating that the service has 'no logs whatsoever!', Saying, 'We never log your internet activities. No one can find you after visiting a particular website, when they are connected to our server. '
In section OFF of the privacy policy, we Found pretty much the same message, with a little extra detail: 'We don't store your logs anyway. Any information or logs related to your browsing history - the websites you visit, the content you download or stream, your traffic destinations, or your DNS queries - stay with you and you alone.
While that sounds great, there is no way to tell if the company is honoring these no-logging claims. It's pretty much the same story with most VPNs, but a few (TunnelBear, NordVPN, VyprVPN, more) have gone through public audits, giving real evidence that they do what they promise. This is a big improvement over the usual `` you can trust us, no, really '' approach, and we hope more vendors will do the same over the next few years.
FastestVPN's Windows client looks good, with a bright and cheerful interface that performs more or less as you'd expect. Your favorite server is clearly displayed, you can quickly browse through others on a list, and a big Connect button keeps you protected on demand.
Settings are kept to a minimum, with just three options to choose your protocol (OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP), launch the client with Windows, and enable or disable a kill switch.
Although this is quite simple and straightforward, there are some usage issues. When logging in, for example, there is no notification on the desktop to tell you when you are protected. And by pressing Disconnect, you always get a 'Are you sure?' message, requiring an additional click that you usually won't see elsewhere.
There are also bigger issues. We tried to forcefully close an IVEv2 connection with the circuit breaker turned OFF and the client also did not trigger an alert, showing instead that it was still connected. Our internet access was blocked so there was no risk to privacy, but it would definitely confuse the user.
The kill switch test revealed another problem. When we manually closed our connection, the client managed to block internet access, but not immediately. Our test software showed that for a brief period, maybe just a fraction of a second, our real IP address was exposed to the outside world.
We've seen much worse customer issues - many don't have kill switches at all - but they must be a concern. Hopefully FastestVPN will address them soon in the next updates.
The FastestVPN website doesn't shy away from unblocking its website credentials, boasting that the service allows you to 'stream, buffer, watch and listen to censored and geo-restricted content - from anywhere in the world' '.
Our real world experience was a bit different. When we connected to the UK server of FastestVPN, for example, it did not allow us to access BBC iPlayer, with the site showing its usual error `` this content is not available in your location ''.
The service has had more success with YouTube, which has allowed us to stream content only in the United States without difficulty. But the good news didn't last, and we couldn't stream Netflix through any of FastestVPN's seven US servers.
If unblocking websites is high on your priority list, FastestVPN is likely to be a disappointment. You will get much better results from competitors like ExpressVPN, Surfshark, VPN Unlimited or VyprVPN.
FastestVPN claims to block IP and DNS leaks, and our tests confirmed this, with websites like DNS Leak Test, DNS Leak, and IPleak unable to find any issues.
FastestVPN also includes ad blocking, at least according to the website. We're skeptical of the type of ad blocking included with many VPNs, as it often doesn't make any noticeable difference, but FastestVPN was a surprise: it made the most ad-filled pages readable again. The system isn't as efficient as free tools like uBlock Origin, but it's good enough to be useful, especially since VPN-level blocking means it works automatically on every device you connect to, without have to install additional software.
We ran a few basic checks on each of the 35 FastestVPN sites with an automated test suite, and the results were also very positive. Connection times were fast averaging 3 to 5 seconds, latencies were normal, and geolocation checks showed that all servers were providing the IP addresses of the countries advertised.
Our speed tests revealed that FastestVPN was delivering 50Mbps in the UK on our 75Mbps test line. It's a bit slower than usual, but only heavy downloaders are likely to notice issues.
Near locations in the UK gave mixed results, but were generally similar, with for example the Netherlands also hitting 50 Mbps, and France a little underwhelming at 35 Mbps.
This trend continued with US servers, where speeds ranged from 25 to 50Mbs. And even the move to more distant servers made no difference, with Brazil, Australia, India, and Hong Kong all returning to download speeds of 20-40 Mbps.
