Artisan Spotlight: A sustainable livelihood

Millions of people in the developing world are associated with the artisan sector. It is one of the main sources of income for both men and women craftspeople who seek a sustainable livelihood.

However, these artisans are also some of the most marginalized around the world, lacking independent access to the global market and often exploited by unscrupulous middlemen.

One such story of our embroidery artisan - Shehzad who was working with local designers making wedding clothes. He would often struggle to make ends meet during the off wedding season. He has been with us for the last 6 months and now employs atleast 5 more embroidery artisans that are sustainably earning incomes by making Fuchsia Shoes embroidered uppers. Shehzad and his team is now working on making Fuchsia shoes uppers only. Some of their designs in collection are Amira Pink, Amira Black, Marina, Eloise and Penelope.

Introducing “Phulkari” Art

Each year we travel the world in search of great art. Every once in a while, we discover art so special and rare that we can’t wait to bring them home and share! One of our recent discoveries is the “Phulkari” art practiced by a group based out of District Haripur in the province of KPK in Pakistan. An entrepreneur in residence, Nasreen Akhtar runs an embroidery business managing a group of 800 women artisans working around the area. Women working for Nasreen makes Phulkari and cross stitch embroidery on traditional dresses that she sells in local exhibitions across the country. The women working for Nasreen previously earning Pakistani Rupees 1000 – 1500 per month, now earns Rupees 15,000 - 30,000 per month.

We are thrilled to partner with Nasreen and her group who will be creating the embroideries on our new Hummingbird collection. The group will be creating Fuchsia shoe’s upper embroideries, unique to our brand. This partnership provides a more solid stream of demand, creating better work stability for Nasreen’s artisans while adding some amazing fun designs to our product catalogue.

To create Hummingbird, we are using natural, hand-woven fibers like Jute and Khaddar - made from chrysanthemum plants grown sustainably in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Artisan Spotlight: From Brick Kilns to Shoe Making

Did you know by purchasing Fuchsia shoes artisans in Pakistan are experiencing financial stability that enables them to thrive for a better future for themselves and their families? We are so proud to see the transformations in each of the artisans lives and wanted to share the impactful story of one particular artisan on our team.

Manzoor is one of our super talented artisans at Fuchsia, who is focused on stitching shoe soles to uppers by hand. He quit school halfway through grade 5, and started working as a brick laborer. While at this very young age his father suddenly fell terminally ill.

A 12-hour shift at the brick kilns, use to be physically demanding and unsustainable especially during heated summer months. His hands were often burnt while carrying the roasted bricks. He was forced to work long hours for paltry wages and his family was struggling to make ends meet.

Growing up as a child, his only dream to pursue education was far from reality. After spending five years at the kilns, nothing changed except he realized the unsustainable nature of the work and began his search to learn a new skill. When he made up his mind to leave the kilns, it turns out he didn’t have to go too far.

Ashfaq, his neighbor was a shoe maker getting contracts occasionally from a well-established local shop in Lahore. Manzoor offered to help him out for free as long as he teaches him the leather stitching technique. Learning to stitch for a full year after kiln hours, he started looking into possibilities for working for Ashfaq full time. However, Ashfaq didn’t had enough contracts coming in to keep his existing artisans busy at the workshop in any given month.

Couple years later and now eight years into working as a brick laborer, he was hired by Rafiq, the shoe workshop owner who is now making shoes independently for Fuchsia. Today, Manzoor works from the comfort of his house which is a great setup for him being a single parent. He can hand stitch up to a maximum of 10 pairs per day and taking home a sustainable living wage. He is investing majority of his earnings towards his children's education and his oldest daughter will be graduating high school soon.
