The History of Kmart

Kmart is one of America's largest chains of big box department stores. Their headquarters are in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, United States. S. S. Kresge took $6,700 and together with John McCrory opened a five and dime in Memphis, Tennessee in 1897. The following year in 1898 they opened another store in Detroit. In 1916, Kresge introduced a new company in Michigan that took control of operations over the original company. This new company was what is now the present day Kmart. The first store carrying the Kmart name opened in Garden City, Michigan in March of 1962. In the same year eighteen other Kmarts opened.

In 2004 the Kmart company bought Sears for $11 billion. This formed a new corporation, Sears Holdings Corporation. In 2000, its peak time, Kmart operated over 2,100 stores, including over 100 Super Kmart Center stores. Kmart currently has stores in 47 out of 50 states, as well as in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The world's largest Kmart is located in Guam. One of Kmart's most famous attributes has been their Blue Light Specials. Blue Light Specials would happen at random moments, when a store employee would turn on a mobile police light and a specific department would be discounted. They would also announce the sale over the store's loudspeaker. Shipping

Kmart offers four kinds of shipping for their customers. Prices vary depending on order amount. Economy shipping will arrive in approximately 5-7 business days, Standard shipping will arrive in 3-5 business days, Expedited shipping will arrive in 2 business days and Premium shipping will arrive in one business day. At this time, Kmart is not able to ship to P.O. Boxes, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or Guam. Deliveries are made Monday-Friday, with the exception of holidays. Tracking numberes and estimated dates of deliveries can be found on the order center part of your Kmart profile. Orders are only able to be sent to one address. If you'd like to send to multiple addresses, you must place separate orders for each address. Items may be delivered in separate packages, depending on where they are shipped from and whether they're in stock.

Some items qualify as oversized items and will require special handling. If they are over 150 pounds, they classify as oversized. Oversized orders will generally arrive between 8-10 days of the date of order. Kmart will contact you with an arrival date and a 4 hour window of time of when the order will be delivered. Order dates can be rescheduled if the date and time is not convenient for you. Deliveries are delivered to main doors of buildings, not to units or suite numbers. Oversized delivery prices do not include setup by delivery persons. Oversized shipping is only able to deliver to the contingent 48 states of the United States.
