It's no argument that LEGO has grown to be one of the most beloved toy brands all over the world for kids young and old. Ole Kirk Christiansen created Legos in 1934 in Billund, Denmark. At that time, Christiansen was making wooden toys. The word Lego is derived from "leg godt" a Danish phrase translating to "play well". Christiansen expanded his company in 1947 to make plastic toys, and in 1949 be began producing an early version of what we now know as LEGOS. Then, they were called "Automatic Binding Bricks". Christiansen got the design for his "Automatic Binding Bricks" based on a design from Kiddicraft Self-Locking Bricks, a toy patented in 1939 in the United Kingdom, later to be released in 1947.
The motto for The Lego Group is "det bedste er ikke for godt" which roughly translates to "only the best is the best", and more literally meaning "the best is never too good". Christiansen created this motto to inspire his employees to always strive for the best quality, one of his highest held values. The motto is still used today. Plastic toys were roughly 50% of Lego's output by 1951. After an early 1950's visit to the Lego factory in Billund, the Danish trade magazine Legetøjs-Tidende (Toy-Times) saying that plastic would never replace traditional wooden toys. Even though the use of plastic in children's toys is widely disliked, LEGO seems to be the exception by a landslide, partly because of the high standards set by Christiansen.
