The company's roots go back to 1956, when the then 21-year-old Gabriel Escarrer Juliá rented the Altair Hotel in Palma de Mallorca. In the following years Escarrer took advantage of the island's increasing popularity as a tourist destination and from time to time integrated more and more hotels into his company Hoteles Mallorquines. In the 1960s and 1970s, the hotel chain also expanded geographically by acquiring hotels in both the Canary Islands and the rest of the Balearic Islands. After the end of General Franco's reign, tourism in Spain developed faster than ever before and Hoteles Mallorquines was able to expand into the Spanish interior with great dynamism. In this way, a nationwide presence in Spain was achieved in the early 1980s.

In 1984 the hotel chain was renamed Hoteles Sol. Only a short time later, the company was able to establish itself as the largest hotel chain in Spain after successfully acquiring the Hotasa Group. This was represented at a total of 32 locations. Another merger took place three years later with the Meliá hotel chain, which then became today's Sol Meliá chain.
