The NH Hotel Group began in 1978, when it opened its first establishment: the Ciudad de Pamplona hotel. Four years later, the chain went beyond the Navarra region: with the addition of NH Calderón de Barcelona to its portfolio, it took its first steps towards national growth, an expansion that gained strength throughout the eighties.
Barely a decade after its constitution, the Company managed hotels in Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza, having established itself as one of the main chains in Spain. Corporación Financiera Reunida, SA (COFIR) became the main shareholder of the Company in 1988.
At the end of 1995, NH was already one of the main hotel chains in Spain, with 54 establishments spread throughout the country. As part of its strategic efforts to promote culture, in 1998 the chain launched NH Stock Art, traveling exhibitions in the vicinity of the Group's hotels, in an attempt to support the work of future artists. This was also the year in which the Group launched its corporate website, www.nh-hoteles.com, incorporating a new direct sales channel.
The end of the decade also marked the beginning of the Company's international expansion. In 1998, the chain positioned itself in Latin America and, in 1999, it began its European adventure after acquiring a stake in Jolly Hotels (19.1%). It was also the year in which a strategic alliance was formed in MERCOSUR to invest in Latin America through the creation of the Equity International Properties fund. The company already had 88 hotels and this growth trajectory was evidenced by its debut on the leading Spanish stock index, the IBEX 35.
In 1999, NH Hoteles also acquired 91.5% of Sotogrande, a company dedicated to the development of premium residences designed for family life.
In 2000, the company acquired the Dutch hotel chain Krasnapolsky, a transaction that doubled in size. After this agreement, NH had 168 hotels, 7,300 employees and a presence in 15 countries, with Portugal joining the fight shortly thereafter. This positioned the Company as the third largest hotel chain in Europe and made it the leader in most of its main destinations in the city.
The acquisition of the Mexican hotel chain Chartwell in 2001 added another 14 establishments. At this point, the company has decided to operate worldwide under a single brand and integrate its nine existing sales offices around the world.
In 2002, NH continued its international growth strategy led by M&A, acquiring the German chain Astron Hotels, which added 46 hotels in Germany, six in Austria and one in Switzerland to the growing portfolio.
In 2004, the chain entered additional new markets. With 240 hotels and 35,000 rooms in 18 countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa, in 2004 and 2005, NH Hoteles entered the markets of Italy, Romania, the United Kingdom and France. In the latter two markets, the chain opened its inaugural hotels in London and Lyon, respectively. In 2006, the company exceeded 14,000 employees and the chain became the undisputed industry leader in Italy, following the acquisition of the local hotel chains Framon and Jolly. That year, in Milan, the Group opened its first nhow, a new class of hotel aimed at a contemporary, sophisticated and cosmopolitan clientele. Awarded the Prince Felipe Award for Tourism Excellence and voted Best Place to Work in Spain, the Netherlands and Germany, NH Hoteles started 2007 with 341 hotels in 21 countries on three continents.
In 2009, NH and the Spanish chain Hesperia agreed to merge their respective hotel management businesses. Thanks to this operation, NH Hoteles took over the management of 51 hotels owned and managed at that time by Hesperia.
That same year, NH created a purchasing cooperation platform. The platform, called Cooperama, was designed to additionally serve other chains, thus increasing the competitiveness of the sector. NH Hoteles has continued to receive accolades over the years for almost all of its initiative lines.
