Pools are finally open again and chances are, you’re ready to have some fun in the hot summer sun. But before you throw on that new swimsuit, read these easy steps to help protect your semi-permanent color and minimize damage from chlorine. Let’s dive in!
Following basic pool protocol is good for a lot of reasons. But hitting the showers before you hit the pool actually helps prolong the life of your hair color too! Saturating your mane with clean water makes it harder for chlorine, salt, and other damaging chemicals to permeate your strands, strip away your shade or turn blonde hair chlorine green.
Grab a protective hair oil (coconut, argan or camellia will do) and apply a light layer of it to your freshly-rinsed strands, taking an extra minute to focus on dry or damaged ends. Doing this will create a protective barrier between your strands and the pool or salt water.
Give the oil about 5 minutes to soak in. While you’re waiting, grab that waterproof sunblock and slather it on to protect your skin.
Throw on that adorable dad hat, baseball cap or this amazing oVertone Bucket Hat to protect your mane from color-zapping UV rays. Bonus: you’ll look super cute while also protecting your eyes and face.
If you’re hanging at the pool all day long, make sure you check in on your hair periodically! If it feels dry, apply a little more oil to your mane (and sunscreen to your body).
When you’re done soaking up the sun, head straight to the shower and apply a nourishing hair mask or ultra-hydrating deep conditioning treatment (The Remedy anyone?) This will refresh your color, replenish moisture and repair any damage caused by chlorine, water, and UV rays.
If chlorine has turned your blonde hair green, don’t panic. Reach for our Pink Toning Conditioner and read this blog to get all the info you need on removing unwanted undertones from your mane.
Changing up your look doesn’t have to be a time-consuming, expensive process. A new you is only a few minutes and a few bucks away with a twist on our new favorite hair trend — money pieces!
If you haven’t heard the term before, money pieces are face-framing highlights achieved by lightening the very front strands of your hair — so named because they make you look expensive in a super cost-effective way.
If you have seen stylists and celebs rocking this look, chances are you’ve seen it done with lightened pieces of hair, but our take on money pieces can be done bleach-free and in the comfort of your own home. All you have to do is add a little color!
This may be our most cost-effective color technique ever, because guess what? You can totally create colorful money pieces with nothing but a Coloring Conditioner sample. We originally created these 2-ounce samples as a means to test-run a new color, with just enough conditioner to test a couple strands of hair.
The cool thing about money pieces? They’re just a couple strands of hair.
To get the look, section out a thin strand of clean, dry hair on each side of your face (optional: put the rest of your hair up in a clip or hair tie to keep it out of the way). Grab the Coloring Conditioner sample of your choice — Emily, above, combined Vibrant Magenta and Vibrant Purple for a custom shade — and apply color to each section, saturating thoroughly. Let sit for 10-15 minutes, rinse, and you’re done!
Dry and style your hair as usual, and be sure to show us the new you — tag your selfies with @overtonecolor, #oVertonecolor, and #oVertonehair!

When it comes to getting the most out of your oVertone experience, there is one incredibly important step you need to take: SATURATE! Whether you are applying Daily Conditioner or the Deep Treatment, it is important to completely soak your strands. This way, the conditioner will get a chance to evenly deposit color and your hair will be able to soak up as much pigment as possible. When applying, you can start with wet or dry hair (dry hair will give you a brighter result). It helps to look in the mirror during this step, so you can make sure all of your hair is covered. Starting at your roots and working your way down your hair is an effective way to saturate your strands completely. However you go about applying, make sure your hair is totally covered in oVertone!
