Define what it means to be a digital company.
Philips was looking to create this customer decision journey, but first they needed to define what they meant by becoming a digital company. They define four critical components of digital:
Accelerate digital transformation across the organization.
A key piece of building the customer journey is cohesiveness across the organization. Your customer's journey will likely span a number of different teams and business units. It's imperative to be on one page with your customer decision journey across the company.
Build the ecosystem of touchpoints around your customer decision journey.
The customer journey contains every touchpoint a customer has with your brand including search, content management, social media, digital ads, digital marketing, analytics, customer service, sales, and more. Phillips had no shortage of digital programs - but there was no common operating model for how they were doing business. Bringing that customer journey to the forefront of their business was necessary to drive relationships with their customers and gain insight from product and marketing. So Philips took the time to pull together the ecosystem around the customer decision journey. Below is a snapshot of how Philips has built out their ecosystem of touchpoints:
Utilize your greatest asset-your employees.
As part of managing their digital network, Philips has also found great success in building a brand ambassador program. They now have over 1,000 employees in the program. It's important to think about how you can utilize your own employees and assets.

Royal Philips NV is reportedly planning to acquire more medical device companies as it attempts to add heft to its newly-created HealthTech business.
Philips is targeting smaller acquisitions, as well as multi-billion-euro deals, over the next six to 12 months, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. In particular, Philips is said to be on the lookout for device companies engaged in the areas of radiotherapy, imaging, and home care, both in the United States and in Europe, where Philips is based.
Since the beginning of their business in the 19th century, Philips has expanded to over 100 countries and evolved with the times. It continues to lead the world's health-tech industry in the current IoT age. We interviewed Hiroyuki Tsutsumi, President & CEO of Philips Japan, Ltd. about the initiatives of the company which offer various solutions in the rapidly aging Japanese market and are attracting attention from around the globe.
Evolving under the keyword 'connect'
Philips aims to improve the lives of three billion people around the world through its products and services by 2025. The Japanese corporation changed its name from Philips Electronics Japan, Ltd. to Philips Japan, Ltd. in October 2017, and drastically changed its direction in order to become the world's top health-tech company.
Breaking away from its long-established history as a company of electronics such as audio equipment, TVs and lighting, Philips Japan is now evolving from a company that sells 'products' to a company that offers IoT healthcare 'solutions' under the keyword 'connect.' Connecting a wide range of equipment and locations such as hospitals, communities and remote areas will greatly change the lives of people if achieved. Philips Japan developed its own cloud platform (Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform) to support health throughout the cycle of life, from support for healthy living to prevention, treatment, diagnosis and home care, which demonstrates its motivation for the increasing use of IoT.
Company history
1891 Start of business as a manufacturer of carbon filament lamps
1912 Launch of initial stock offering in the Netherlands
During the 1920s, the company's headquarters at Eindhoven underwent extensive renovation and expansion, with the construction of additional buildings for new and existing industrial products. Toward the end of the decade, Philips' Lamp Works set up more overseas subsidiaries in Asia and Africa, as well as in Europe and South America in the 1930s.
Despite Depression-driven cutbacks in the 1930s, the company forged ahead with new products such as gas-discharge lamps, X-ray equipment, car radios, telecommunications equipment, welding rods, and electric shavers, all of which ultimately helped alleviate the company's financial difficulties.
An important administrative reorganization occurred just before World War II. Anton Philips retired in 1939 as president, although he remained active in a supervisory role. He was succeeded as president by his son-in-law, Frans Otten, while his son, Frits Philips, was made a director of the company. Under this leadership, the company took precautionary measures against the war that resulted in the formation of North American Philips (NAP), the precursor to Philips Electronics North America Corp. (PENAC).
1952 Establishment of joint venture company Matsushita Electronics Corporation by Philips Incandescent Lamp Manufacturing, Ltd. (headquartered in the Netherlands) and Matsushita Electric Industrial, Co. Ltd.
1953 Nippon Electronics Development Co., Ltd. begins importing Philips products to Japan, marking the start of Philips in Japan
1990 Merger of Japan Philips, Ltd. and Philips, Ltd. into Japan Philips, Ltd.
2005 Merger of Japan Philips, Ltd. and Philips Medical Systems, Ltd. into Philips Electronics Japan, Ltd.
2010 Fuji Respironics Co., Ltd. changes its name to Philips Respironics GK
2017 Philips Electronics Japan, Ltd. changes its name to Philips Japan, Ltd.
