ProtonVPN is a VPN service with no protocols. We do not track or record your internet activity and therefore cannot pass this information on to third parties.
ProtonVPN can also be integrated into the Tor anonymity network. With a single click, you can route all of your traffic through the Tor network and access onion websites.
Our goal is to make online data protection accessible to everyone. To this end, we have focused on making the advanced security technology in ProtonVPN easy to use and freely available.
We believe that privacy and security are fundamental human rights, so we are also making a free version of ProtonVPN available to the public. Unlike other free VPNs, there are no catches. We don't run ads or secretly sell your browsing history. ProtonVPN Free is subsidized by paid ProtonVPN users. If you're looking to help protect online privacy, consider upgrading to a paid plan for faster speeds and more features.
EASY TO USE
The best security tools in the world will only protect you if they are used correctly and consistently. We've simplified the ProtonVPN interface a lot to make it as intuitive as possible. So you can easily stay protected every day.
FAST VPN SPEEDS
We provide high end servers with high bandwidth connections to ensure fast connection speeds for our users. Connect to ProtonVPN and surf the web, stream music and watch videos like always.
ProtonVPN is available on all of your devices including PC , Mac , smartphones and even routers. A secure internet connection that you can trust is important to protect your privacy on your home laptop, mobile device on the go, or your workstation in the office. ProtonVPN offers native apps for Android, iOS, MacOS and Windows.
GLOBAL VPN SERVER NETWORK
ProtonVPN has hundreds of secure VPN servers around the world including several free VPN servers. This ensures that there is always a high bandwidth server nearby no matter where you're connecting from, and provides a low-latency VPN connection for the best performance.
We designed ProtonVPN with additional security features to protect your privacy better than an ordinary VPN.
When you use ProtonVPN to surf the internet, your internet connection is encrypted. By forwarding your connection through encrypted tunnels, the advanced security functions of ProtonVPN ensure that an attacker cannot eavesdrop on your connection. It also gives you access to websites that may be blocked in your country.
Safe core
The Secure Core architecture of ProtonVPN offers our secure VPN service the unique opportunity to defend itself against network-based attacks. Secure Core protects your connection by directing your traffic through multiple servers before it leaves our network. This means that an advanced opponent who can monitor the network traffic on the Exit server, neither the true IP address of ProtonVPN- users still browsing activity can assign this IP determined.
Secure core servers are located are located in hardened data centers in Switzerland, Iceland and Sweden, are protected by strict data protection laws and are operated in our own dedicated networks.
Strong encryption
We only use the highest strength encryption to protect your internet connection. This means that all network traffic is encrypted with AES-256, key exchange is done with 4096-bit RSA, and HMAC with SHA384 is used for message authentication.
Forward secrecy
We have carefully selected our encryption cipher suites to only include those with Perfect Forward Secrecy. This means that your encrypted traffic cannot be captured and decrypted later if the encryption key of a subsequent session is compromised. With each connection we generate a new encryption key so that a key is never used for more than one session.
Strong protocols
We only use VPN protocols that are known to be secure - IKEv2 / IPSec and OpenVPN. ProtonVPN does not have servers that support PPTP and L2TP / IPSec, although they are cheaper to run. By using ProtonVPN you can be sure that your VPN tunnel is protected by the most reliable protocol.
Swiss base
In addition to strong technical security, ProtonVPN also benefits from strong legal protection. As we are based in Switzerland, ProtonVPN is protected by some of the world's strictest data protection laws and remains outside the jurisdiction of the US and the EU. This means that unlike VPN providers in a fourteen-eyed country, we cannot be forced to spy on our users.
Trustworthy
It is important that you use a trustworthy VPN. That's why we're one of the few VPN companies that knows exactly who's running the service. Our team has a long track record of security, having previously developed ProtonMail - the world's largest encrypted email service. Whether it's challenging governments, educating the public, or training journalists, we have a long history of fighting for privacy online and contributing to the open source community.
Physical security
We have gone to extreme lengths to protect ProtonVPN's Secure Core servers and ensure their security. The critical infrastructure in Switzerland is located in a former fallout shelter of the Swiss Army 1000 meters below the surface. Likewise, our Icelandic infrastructure is located in a secure former military base. Our servers in Sweden are also located in an underground data center. By shipping our own devices to these locations, we ensure that our servers are also secure at the hardware level.
No protocol policy
According to Swiss law, we are neither obliged to save user connection logs, nor can we be forced to log specific users. In this way we can ensure that your private browsing history actually remains private and cannot be passed on to third parties under any circumstances. Our no logs policy applies to all users, including anyone, who use our free VPN.
DNS leak prevention
ProtonVPN not just protect your browser traffic, we protect your DNS queries too. By doing your DNS queries through the encrypted tunnel and not relying on third-party DNS providers, we ensure that your browsing activities are not compromised by leaks from DNS queries.
Kill Switch and Always-On VPN
ProtonVPN applications offer an integrated kill switch function or the always-on VPN function. In the event that you lose connection to the VPN server, Kill Switch blocks all network traffic while Always-on automatically reconnects to a VPN server. These features prevent a VPN server connection from inadvertently compromising your privacy by revealing your true IP address.
Tor over VPN
ProtonVPN has built-in gate support. Our VPN servers that support Tor allow you to route all your traffic through the Tor anonymity network and also access dark websites. This provides a convenient way to access onion websites with just one click.
Anonymous
We respect your privacy, so no personal identification information is required to get an ProtonVPN account. You can log in with an anonymous ProtonMail email account and use our anonymous VPN without revealing your identity.
High speed
We only use high-speed servers for optimal performance. All ProtonVPN servers have a bandwidth of at least 1 Gbps, and many of our servers use 10 Gbps connections as well. This means that while we only use the strongest encryption, ProtonVPN also offers lightning-fast speeds.
Easy to use
We understand that it is important that security technology is easy to use. We designed the ProtonVPN applications to have a simple and intuitive interface so that you can browse privately and anonymously with a single click. In addition, you can create custom connection profiles that will automatically protect your device when you connect to the Internet.
ProtonVPN Human Verification
In order to maintain the integrity of our service, ProtonVPN must take measures to avoid creating accounts by bots. Such fake accounts could consume network bandwidth and slow down all of our real users' connections.
To prevent spam bots from creating accounts, ProtonVPN uses two different human verification methods. The first time you log in, you will be asked how you would like to receive your human verification code via email or SMS. If you enter an email that will be used for verification by the human in another account, it will be blocked. In rare cases, the SMS option can also be blocked. In this case, please contact our support team. They will ask you a few questions and then send you a link to create your account.
DO NOT close the human review page. This will invalidate your recovery code and you will have to repeat the login process.
Once your account has been set up, if our system has problems identifying you as a human being when you log in, you may be asked to enter the verification code that we will send you using the method you have chosen. We have an algorithm that determines when our users need to perform a verification method that takes into account many different factors.
If you are trying to create multiple ProtonVPN accounts, you can generally trigger a verification request. However, this is not the only factor that can lead to a human verification request. If you are using certain Tor exit IPs, you may be asked to verify that you are human, especially if those exit IPs are frequently abused by spammers or attackers trying to brutally enforce user accounts.
If your only option is to verify your account via email or SMS and you want to avoid these verification methods, you can upgrade to a premium account using PayPal or Bitcoin.
If you share your email address or phone number to receive a verification code, we will only keep a cryptographic hash of it. This hash is not permanently associated with the account you created. Since hash functions are one-way functions, we cannot derive your telephone number or email address from this hash. However, if the phone number matches the phone number you originally provided us with when you signed up, it will result in the same cryptographic hash. By comparing hashes, we can see the reuse of phone numbers or email addresses in other accounts.
ProtonVPN respects the privacy of its users and enforces a no-log policy. This means that your VPN connections stay private and we don't store any information about your connections or the websites you visit.
To keep your account secure and to ensure that you sign in, we store a single timestamp of the last time your account was signed in. Here, too, we do not save any information about where you logged in from or how long you were logged in.
Streaming guide for new ProtonVPN users
Depending on which country you are in, your choice of content for streaming services can be severely limited. With ProtonVPN, travelers can access geoblocked content available in their home country.
Which server you need to connect in which country depends on the streaming service you want to watch.
How to unblock Netflix using ProtonVPN
Netflix was the first major video-on-demand streaming service. Not only did they make it easy for you to find all of your favorite old TV shows, they also produced original content, including Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, and Ozark.
What's more, ProtonVPN lets you stream HBO Now , Disney +, and Amazon Prime Video no matter where you are in the world.
ProtonVPN users can watch Netflix on our VPN servers in almost every country
Some TV shows and movies on Netflix are geo-restricted. To stream this content you will need to connect to an ProtonVPN Plus server in the relevant country. There is a P symbol next to servers in our MacOS and Windows apps. You can find them in the list of Plus servers in our Android and iOS apps.
Plus and Visionary Plan subscribers are available to Plus servers. For the fastest, most reliable connection, connect to the server closest to your current location. To find the servers closest to you, check out the full list of our servers.
ProtonVPN does not tolerate the use of our VPN service to circumvent copyright regulations.
What is Secure Core VPN?
ProtonVPN has a secure core function that ensures data protection and data security improves the user experience by mitigating some of the risks of a compromised VPN server.
A common way to expose VPN traffic is to compromise the server that is processing your traffic. This risk is particularly acute for servers located in high risk countries. To minimize this risk, ProtonVPN has Secure Core servers. This article provides an overview of the attacks and threats that Secure Core mitigates, how they provide greater VPN privacy, and instructions on how to enable Secure Core in ProtonVPN.
1. What does Secure Core protect against?
ProtonVPN's unique Secure Core architecture enables us to protect our users from network attacks that other VPNs cannot defend against. In a classic VPN setup, a client forwards traffic via a VPN server on its way to the final destination. If an attacker can gain control of the VPN server or monitor the server's network, he can match VPN clients with their traffic, which invalidates the privacy benefits of the VPN.
Such timing / correlation attacks are not difficult to perform. In countries with restrictive internet regulations (China, Russia, Iran, Turkey etc) or countries with extensive surveillance powers (US, UK etc), government surveillance agencies usually have the legal option to force either the VPN provider or the network / server -Provider of the VPN provider to help with such network monitoring. Although ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland, we cannot be sure that the authorities are not monitoring our VPN servers in these high risk countries.
2. How does Secure Core increase VPN privacy?
With Secure Core, we can defend ourselves against this VPN privacy threat by routing user traffic through multiple servers. When you connect to a server in a high risk area like the United States, your traffic will first be routed through our Secure Core servers. Even if an attacker were to monitor our US servers, they could only trace traffic to the edge of our Secure Core network, making it far more difficult to determine the true IP address and location of the ProtonVPN users.
We have also gone to extraordinary lengths to defend our Secure Core servers. First, servers are located in countries specially selected for their strict data protection laws (Iceland, Switzerland and Sweden). We have also placed our Secure Core servers in high security data centers to ensure a high level of physical security. The ProtonVPN infrastructure in Switzerland and Sweden is in underground data centers, while our Iceland servers are on a former military base. In addition, Secure Core servers are 100% owned and provided by us (shipped directly from our offices on site). Finally, Secure Core servers are connected to the Internet through our own dedicated network with IP addresses owned and operated by our own Local Internet Registry (LIR).
These measures offer us a much higher level of security that nobody has tampered with our Secure Core servers. Although there is no 100% security, Secure Core is just one of the many ways by which ProtonVPN provides better security and privacy by protecting against sophisticated attacks can not defend against the other VPNs.

The Swiss home of ProtonVPN offers an immediate privacy advantage over most of the competition. The country has very strong privacy laws, is outside the jurisdiction of the US and the EU and is not a member of the 14-eye surveillance network. The company states its registration policy very clearly on the website: "ProtonVPN is an unregistered VPN service. We do not track or record your activity on the Internet and therefore we cannot disclose this information to third parties". The session log is almost non-existent. The company stores the timestamp of the last successful login attempt, but that's it. This is overridden when you do the next login, so it only reflects the last session. ProtonVPN associates your account with an email address when you sign up, but that address can be anything you want. The company suggests using ProtonMail if you prefer to remain completely anonymous. Sign up for the free plan and you won't be asked to provide payment details. Choose something else and you can choose to pay with Bitcoin. If you use PayPal or a credit card, payments will be processed by a third party and ProtonVPN will not see your billing details. Signing up for ProtonVPN is generally very easy, albeit with one or two unexpected complexities. You can pay on Bitcoin, for example, but if you're a new user (you don't have a free plan), you can't just provide your details on a payment form. The form doesn't even mention any support for Bitcoin. Somehow, you need to know this in advance, contact support, follow the instructions and maybe wait up to 36 hours. However, there were no problems with our payment via PayPal. After handing over the money, ProtonVPN directed us to our account panel, a useful web portal with useful files and information. This includes account details, login credentials, an OpenVPN configuration file generator, a download link for the Windows client and links to instructions for configuring Mac, Linux , iOS and Android devices .
