VyprVPN has been around for a long time and has undergone several massive changes. The last round brought a great interface and even better security, although speed issues remain. Read our fully updated VyprVPN review for more details.

VyprVPN is a VPN provider that achieves almost everything. Its emphasis on privacy is obvious: it offers a proprietary protocol that works well in China, and it can break through streaming blocks like they never existed. That said, VyprVPN's limited server locations and slow speed prevent it from being the best VPN.

In this VyprVPN review, we're going to take a look at the VPN's recently updated website and app, while judging its features, speed, security, and more. Along the way, we'll compare VyprVPN to elite VPN services, such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN, to see how well it can stand up to space-dominating providers (read our ExpressVPN review).

Surprisingly, VyprVPN holds up well. While still missing a few critical parts, VyprVPN gets most of the way, and does so with a low monthly cost. VPN isn't perfect, and we'll explain why, but it's definitely worth a look. You can try it out for yourself with a 30 day money back guarantee.

As we'll see in the 'usability' section below, VyprVPN has a very streamlined interface. Despite this, the dev team managed to cram a ton of features. From startup options to DNS settings, the VPN is highly configurable. That said, it lacks a few features that services like TorGuard offer (read our TorGuard review).

The range of startup settings allow you to automatically connect to the VPN when you turn on your machine, as well as automatically connect to public WiFi networks. Moving down the list of essentials, VyprVPN also includes a configurable kill switch. You can configure the kill switch to block traffic across your entire connection or just to apps.

Plus, you can play around with some advanced settings like which DNS servers you want to use and which TAP adapter makes the connection, but that's a pretty standard fare. We are disappointed, however, that VyprVPN has removed so many advanced settings in this most recent version of the app.

In previous versions, you had fine-grained control over your connection, right down to route delay time and connection log verbosity. These settings are now gone. While most users won't miss them, it's a bit of a letdown for us techies.

Linux, routers and more

The features of VyprVPN are great, although they are a bit standard. What is not in stock is the platform support. Of course, VyprVPN covers Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, but the big addition is Android TV.

VyprVPN is one of the few VPNs with an app specifically designed for smart TVs, which is huge. VPNs are often used for streaming, and with an Android TV app, you can protect the device you're probably using for streaming.

There is however a big problem with the support of its platform. VyprVPN does not have a native application for Linux, which is nonsense. Almost every top VPN service has a native Linux app, so there's no excuse for VyprVPN. You can get the service to work on Linux through a manual installation, but that's a problem.

Fortunately, VyprVPN makes up for this with a router app. Like almost all VPNs, you can install VyprVPN on your router. However, it has a dedicated app available for MIPS and ARM based routers, allowing you to configure your connection settings and choose which devices use the VPN tunnel.

VyprVPN used to have a confusing pricing structure, with a more expensive plan including its Chameleon protocol and a cheaper one with only the essentials. Fortunately, it has removed the two levels of service in favor of a single subscription available in several terms. Now, it's one of the cheapest VPNs on the market.

The price still can't compete with the best free VPN, Windscribe, but it beats most other services (read our Windscribe review). At the end of the year, VyprVPN is cheaper than ProtonVPN and Surfshark, with a nice two-year option for just $ 15 more. The monthly price isn't that good, but it's still cheaper than Astrill, at least.

For the price, you get five simultaneous connections, which is good if you can install VyprVPN on your router. When it comes to simultaneous connections, five is usually the benchmark. That's not a bad thing, but VyprVPN didn't make the cut in our best guide to VPN for multiple devices.

When it comes time to pay, VyprVPN accepts PayPal, credit cards, and UnionPay, but not bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency. There's really no way to buy the VPN anonymously, which is disappointing. Crypto is the norm for anonymous payment, with some services, like Mullvad, going so far as to accept cash (read our Mullvad review).

Does VyprVPN have a free trial?

In addition to revising its pricing structure, VyprVPN has discontinued its three-day free trial in favor of a refund policy. Previously, you could open an account and use the service for free for three days. As we've seen with services like Astrill, however, these trial periods are difficult to enforce without some sort of device fingerprint.

It's disappointing that there is no trial period, but in its place, a 30-day money-back guarantee. Instead of just three days, you have a full month to try it out. You'll have to spend some money up front, but that's better than trying the service for three days and potentially encountering some sort of device fingerprint (read our Astrill review for an example).

The redesigned VyprVPN site and app did wonders for the service. Miraculously, VyprVPN has managed to remove the rough edges from its old app while retaining most of the character. Now it's easier than ever to use, with a streamlined checkout process, to get started.

The Windows app has a form factor familiar to other popular VPNs. It is designed as a smartphone app, similar to ExpressVPN's local app. Out of the box, VyprVPN selects the fastest server for your location. All you have to do is click the big 'connect' button to protect your connection.

Apart from the main screen, there are two tabs: 'customize' and 'servers'. The server list is easy to navigate, with VyprVPN offering multiple filtering options and showing latency next to each entry, but we like its settings screen more. A combination of icons next to each setting and a spacious overall design make this setup menu more accessible than most.

However, the app is not perfect. There is a serious lack of information on the login screen. VyprVPN displays the location you are logged in to and the time of the session, but nothing else. Also, when the "fastest server" option is enabled, it does not show which location you will connect to.

Fortunately, this is a small problem, and easy to ignore, given the way the app is designed differently. VyprVPN doesn't fire any shots with its ease of use, and it doesn't need to. The app is familiar, it ensures users are logged in quickly, and doesn't go too far into the settings rabbit.

VyprVPN has never been the fastest VPN service, and in its test this time around, things were no different. Inconsistent network speeds and large drops in download speeds lead to an overall slow experience. It's fixable, as long as you don't do anything too network intensive, but otherwise it's not great.

The above tests were run with OpenVPN and AES-256 encryption using VyprVPN's own DNS servers. That's the setup that comes out of the box, and that's what we use to compare vendors.

As you can see, VyprVPN takes a hefty tax on the end of the download, although it is not consistent from place to place. For example, Chicago performed better than New York, while the Netherlands was better than both.

Whenever we see poor performance, we first study the protocol (read our CyberGhost review for another example of a service that doesn't take OpenVPN nicely). We have switched to the Chameleon protocol - more on that below - and are running the first tests again.

Fortunately, there was an improvement in performance in Chicago and New York, almost doubling the download speed of OpenVPN. It's odd, though, as Chameleon is essentially just OpenVPN. Latency has also increased in New York, so if you're using VyprVPN for gaming, it's best to stick with OpenVPN.

Finally, we ran a third round of tests using IKEv2, which is generally much faster than OpenVPN. Sure enough, we got significantly improved results, with download speeds well above 100 Mbps in Chicago and New York, and just below that mark in the Netherlands. If you need speed, IKEv2 is the best option.

VyprVPN isn't fast, with poor OpenVPN performance and inconsistency between locations. However, IKEv2 solved all of our issues, delivering much higher download speeds and a gradient between locations, which is the behavior we've come to expect. We will retest and update this review with the results from WireGuard once it is released on Windows. Based on what we've seen from other services, WireGuard should perform much better than OpenVPN.

IKEv2 with IPSec is a good choice in the majority of situations, which we'll see in a minute. However, we have seen much better performance of OpenVPN with other services (read our Private Internet Access review for just one example).

VyprVPN installs with the VPN security cocktail we've always been looking for: OpenVPN with AES-256. As we saw in the speed tests, this is not the best choice for getting the most out of VyprVPN.

However, when it comes to security, OpenVPN reigns supreme (read our VPN protocol breakdown for more). Beyond that, you can use IKEv2 paired with IPSec and VyprVPN's own Chameleon protocol (more on that in a bit).

When paired with IPSec, IKEv2 is just as secure as OpenVPN when it comes to encryption, capable of using AES-256 and even newer ciphers like ChaCha20 (read our encryption description to learn more about these two). However, because it encrypts in the IP layer and not in the transport layer, it is more susceptible to firewall blocks.

In between, OpenVPN is generally considered more secure, given that it is open source and handles like standard SSL / TLS traffic. Due to its poor performance, you might want to upgrade to IKEv2.

This is where a newer protocol like WireGuard would come in handy, which many other services have already started to implement (read our NordVPN review for an example). VyprVPN has WireGuard in its beta, although it's only on iOS at the moment.

Fortunately, you can use IKEv2 without much risk. We performed DNS leak tests for OpenVPN and IKEv2, and in both cases there was no redirect to our ISP. That said, we noticed that VyprVPN's DNS is sending requests to several private companies with cloud infrastructure, including Amazon and DigitalOcean.

Torrent with VyprVPN

VyprVPN earned a place in our best VPN guide for torrenting thanks to its excellent security. Speeds are approximate, but VyprVPN does not treat peer-to-peer traffic any differently from any other traffic. For this reason, you are free to torrent on any server you like, unlike NordVPN and CyberGhost, which restrict torrenting to a certain set of locations.

Even with the slowdown, it is better to enable VyprVPN while torrenting rather than not. Torrenting is illegal in most countries, and after a few DMCA notifications from your ISP, you will be subject to fines. As long as you're connected to a VPN, you'll be fine. Your ISP will have no way of knowing what you are doing online.

VyprVPN in China and other high risk countries

We can talk about OpenVPN and IKEv2 all day long, but the main attraction of VyprVPN is Chameleon. This proprietary protocol uses the guts of OpenVPN to negotiate the connection and manage the encryption. However, each packet also goes through a layer of obfuscation, scrambling the metadata inside.

For countries with strict censorship, like China, this is huge. Manual censors in these oppressive countries can often detect a VPN connection through a process called 'deep packet inspection' (DPI). The Chinese government, in particular, monitors traffic around the clock, blocking anything it deems harmful to Chinese citizens (this usually includes VPN traffic).

VyprVPN got a spot in our Best VPN Guide for China on the back of its Chameleon protocol. By scrambling packet metadata, Chameleon provides all the security benefits of OpenVPN without risking being caught by a censor who inspects packets.

While it is always risky to use a VPN in countries with deep internet monitoring, VyprVPN is a better choice than most other options.

VyprVPN says at the top of its privacy policy that it is a `` log-free VPN service. '' It's not just an unsupported claim either. He enlisted Leviathan Security to audit its no-logging policy, ensuring that there was absolutely no user data stored in the logs generated by the users. servers. He found a few things that VyprVPN quickly fixed.

In short, VyprVPN does not know your source IP address, destination IP address, browsing history, traffic content or anything else. Additionally, VyprVPN offers its VyprDNS servers, which also do not keep logs.

We did, however, encounter some DNS requests sent to third parties. We don't know for sure, although we do assume that these requests are for cloud nodes that VyprVPN manages and leases to a larger company.

Your VPN connection is private, but VyprVPN still has information about you. Namely, its parent company, Golden Frog, owns your name, email address, billing country, and zip code. This information is needed for payments, but it wouldn't be if VyprVPN accepted anonymous payment methods.

It's unclear exactly what Golden Frog does with this information, other than promotional emails and the like. The privacy policy does not specify whether Golden Frog sells the data or not.

That said, Golden Frog is based in Switzerland, which may be the most privacy-friendly country in the world. With strict laws protecting user data on books, there is no risk in trusting Golden Frog with some basic information.

VyprVPN keep logs?

VyprVPN doesn't know anything about your VPN, which has been proven by a third-party security audit. Unlike IPVanish, which claimed that no logs should be caught lying down later, VyprVPN really doesn't know anything about what you do online (read our IPVanish review).

At the most, someone might understand that you signed up for VyprVPN, but not that you used it, let alone how you used it. Even that is unlikely, given the stringency of privacy laws in Switzerland. In short, you shouldn't worry about VyprVPN logging data.

VyprVPN had no problem entering streaming platforms. On the first try, we broke into Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer. VyprVPN is certainly among the best VPNs for streaming, but you have to take into account its often slow speeds.

We have started our streaming tests on OpenVPN. However, after a few long load times, we quickly switched to IKEv2, which was much faster and just as capable of bypassing VPN blocks. Netflix was sensitive to both protocols, however, which is why VyprVPN got a top spot in our Best VPN Guide for Netflix.

Despite the low speeds on OpenVPN, we enjoyed the streaming experience with VyprVPN. Unlike NordVPN, where you have to go through a list of servers to find one that works, VyprVPN worked right away. That said, we recommend switching to IKEv2 if streaming is your primary concern.

VyprVPN with Kodi

In addition to the streaming giants, VyprVPN works well with Kodi. While using Kodi isn't illegal, streaming unlicensed copyrighted content is, so it's best to use a VPN when browsing one of Kodi's many add-ons. . Fortunately, it's easy to protect your Kodi sessions with VyprVPN.

You can of course install it on your router, but VyprVPN is one of the few VPN services that offers an Android TV app. This means that you can install Kodi and VyprVPN on, say, your Nvidia Shield just like you would on your phone. It's an installation process painless, making VyprVPN an ideal Kodi VPN.

VyprVPN manages over 200,000 IP addresses assigned to over 700 servers around the world. The vast majority of sites are in Europe, although VyprVPN has a decent spread in Asia, the Middle East, and South America, which generally don't get the same treatment as North America and Europe.

However, not all of these locations are physical. Like the HideMyAss VPN, VyprVPN uses virtual servers in small and remote countries (read our HideMyAss review). These locations provide you with a local IP address, but the server itself is located in another country.

We're not against virtual servers, but it should be clear which locations are virtual and which are physical. As it is, there is no way to know what kind of server you are connected to in the app. Additionally, VyprVPN doesn't maintain a list of virtual locations on its website, so there's really no way of knowing whether the location you're connecting to is physical or not.

With the redesigned VyprVPN website, the support area is much more accessible. A live chat icon follows you around the site and you can easily access the knowledge base using the "Support" button on the home page. This is customer support at its best: accessible and easy to understand.

The knowledge base is excellent, filled with articles ranging from setting up VyprVPN to managing your account. No matter where you are in the knowledge base, you can get additional customer support by clicking the 'Need Help' button at the top of the screen. This will open the live chat, which initially causes you to speak with a bot.

We don't care too much about support bots, but VyprVPN knows what it is: a glorified search bar. The bot will redirect you to certain knowledge base entries based on your question. Luckily, you can quickly click to speak to a tech support representative, and we found them very helpful in our testing.

VyprVPN has improved dramatically since we last tested it. The app looks a lot nicer, the website is a lot easier to use, and the prices are streamlined. Unfortunately, not all aspects of the service have improved. Speed is always a huge drag on what is otherwise one of the best VPN providers around.

Fortunately, you can work around speed issues with IKEv2, at least until VyprVPN releases WireGuard for each platform. VyprVPN isn't quite there yet, but it's a service to watch in the future.
