The development of War Thunder began under the title World of Planes as early as 2009. Gaijin Entertainment was already known for detailed flight simulations such as IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey and Wings of Prey. The game world is designed in 3D and the game principle is based on player versus player (PvP) battles. Scenarios from the Second World War with models covering the period from 1930 to approx. 1966 serve as the background. There are also prototypes, tanks and aircraft from the early post-war period (Maus, T-54, Leopard 1, Kanonenjagdpanzer 90). Since May 2014, battles on the ground can also be fought with the help of tanks. The use of combat ships is planned for the future. Properties such as aerodynamics, armor and armament can be modified in aircraft from version 1.33. Similar modifications are also possible with the tanks. For all vehicles, new vehicle types and improvements are unlocked via a point system via 'research trees', whereby this research can be accelerated by purchasing the in-game currency Golden Eagles for real money. The aircraft models are rich in detail, the flight behavior can be selected from three different modes between arcade-heavy and simulator-like.
Several vehicles and planes can only be unlocked with the premium game currency or via DLC. This is especially the case with rather rare things, prototypes and conquered vehicles and airplanes.

There are several types of controls available that players can use to control their aircraft based on their own experience and skills. The simplest form of control is the mouse aiming mode, in which the player is supported by a virtual 'instructor' who stabilizes the aircraft and also takes on elements of the control, such as taxiing. In this mode, the player only has access to the simplest elements of the aircraft (controls, shooting, panoramic view). The controls can be expanded in their complexity and the 'trainer' can be switched off, so that the player can ultimately have complete control over all elements of the aircraft.
The aircraft can be played from the cockpit with a virtual head-up display (HUD) or in the third person; many bombers also have a bomb sight and a rear-facing camera that allows control of the gunner.
